God & Games

Being married to a tech savvy geek has lots of perks. Lately we’ve been enjoying one of those perks by playing a variety of video games on a new gaming system. It’s been fun to see Munchkin trying to play some of the games and interacting with him on a different level than before. We’ve had to remind him that the game is just that and starting over isn’t the end. In fact sometimes the restart can help because you’re aware of the difficulties in the levels and can plan accordingly.

In recent news a story came up that got me thinking about how often, in the midst of struggles, regrets and pain there are those who feel they have no hope and end their lives at their own hands. They leave behind family and friends who wonder why the person felt that the final solution was their only solution.

I want to let you know that in the midst of any and all pain you might experience or be feeling that God wants to hold you and help you through the pains, doubts and fears. The song “God Only Knows” by For King and Country sums it up much better than I could.

Wide awake while the world is sound asleepin’
Too afraid of what might show up while you’re dreamin’
Nobody, nobody, nobody sees you
Nobody, nobody, nobody would believe you

Every day you try to pick up all the pieces
All the memories, they somehow never leave you
Nobody, nobody, nobody sees you
Nobody, nobody, nobody would believe you

Emphasis added

When we are overwhelmed with what we are dealing with, whatever it might be, Satan takes that as an open door to layer on more guilt, feelings of hopelessness and despair and generally makes you feel worse than it truly is. He is the great Deceiver and wants us to fail and feel like we don’t amount to anything.

Be serious! Be alert! Your adversary the Devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour.

1 Peter 5:8 [HCSB]

Despite feeling worthless, unable to amount to anything, and just generally a waste of space, please know and realize that you are not alone. God doesn’t see you as anything Satan tries to tell you that you are. You are valued by God. I’m not trying to tell you how to feel when I don’t know exactly what you may be going through, but please understand that I’ve felt like that before.

I’ve felt worthless when I was terminated from a job I had been enjoying, but my health didn’t get the memo and cooperate with my work schedule. I felt like I was unable to amount to anything when it became unfeasible to work and complete my bachelor’s degree at the same time. I have felt like I was a waste of space when I look at how much my diabetic needs cost us on a monthly basis and think of all the debt we could pay off if I just wasn’t diabetic.

When the chorus comes around from the song I mentioned earlier it gets an emotional reaction from me each time. I’m certain if I played it on repeat I would end up being a blubbering mess on the floor after only a few listens. It’s humbling to think that the Lord of All Things and the Creator of both our world and us wants us to be a part of His World (anyone else think of this just now? Okay, maybe just me).

So when the song continues with:

God only knows what you’ve been through
God only knows what they say about you
God only knows how it’s killing you
But there’s a kind of love that God only knows
God only knows what you’ve been through
God only knows what they say about you
God only knows the real you
There’s a kind of love that God only knows

They aren’t just singing words because they sound good together. The words have a weight of truth behind them. I hope that you take the time to find the song and listen to the words they sing and let them seep into your heart and mind so that when that tough time occurs; when the promotion you were aiming for goes to someone you feel is less qualified or when the doctors bill for your chronic condition adds up to more than a house payment you get back up from the hard hit of disappointment and negativity of the situation and think tomorrow can be better. You might not know how it will be better, but to have that hope is paramount for growth and change.

If the disappointments and stresses you are feeling cause the voices in your head to loudly tell you to take that risk that could end your life that you don’t listen to those negative voices. PLEASE reach out to someone, call (800) 273-8255, there will be someone who can help. You matter and are important.
