It’s Your Birthday!

Well, not today, but on Sunday my family and I celebrated my arrival into this world 34 years ago. I’m thankful for another year on this earth, but disliked the fact that I’ve had a stubborn cold for over a week now. Summer colds are annoying and very bothersome. Thank goodness for Claritin D and Ricola throat lozenges.

When I was a kid celebrating my birthday was a bit tricky; it’s after schools out for summer, close to Independence Day, and, lots of people tended to leave for vacation about that time as well. Which makes it tricky to plan a party, so often those celebrating with me I was immediately related to, so brothers, mom & dad. So having a huge birthday bash never really happened, nor did I really want it. A cake, some cards and few presents tended to be just what I wanted, so that’s what my parents delivered.

After I met Mister, celebrating birthdays got a bit trickier, but not in a bad way. See, his birthday is EXACTLY a month before mine, so it’s easy to remember and we both understood the issues that summer birthdays bring. Thankfully, having two families to celebrate with for our birthdays made it fun and even festive.

Then we had Munchkin. Not only was he born right before Father’s Day that year (best gift ever, NEVER topping that one), but his birthday happens in the 30 days between Mister and myself celebrating our arrivals on this earth. Being summer birthday kids ourselves, we wanted to make sure our son had awesome birthdays, with more than just immediate family around to help celebrate if possible. First few years were good, friends & family were able to attend and lots of fun was had. Last year however, Little Miss got sick a few days before Munchkins birthday party, so we had to cancel. He didn’t seem to mind, we still went through with getting his special cupcakes & balloons we had ordered for him. By the way: kids + balloons + ceiling fans = not good things, be warned.

This year we hoped to be able to have friends come over to help celebrate Munchkin turning 5, but had to cancel due to sickness, this time Munchkin was sick (stupid summer colds). We thought, maybe by the next weekend he’d be feeling better so we could reschedule his party, but the long lasting cold hung in for another few days. I wanted to stick with the revised plan for his party, so he wouldn’t feel disappointed, but thankfully not having his party didn’t bother him at all. Family and friends found ways to send his gifts & he was thrilled with the new toys. Now we have a few months until Little Miss gets to celebrate her birthday, so we’ve got time to plan. Hopefully we won’t be sick when the time rolls around.

What about you? Have you ever had issues celebrating your birthday because of how close it is to a big holiday or ever just not wanted to have a party? Let me know in the comments.
